CLEVELAND - Started over 76 years ago, there's a local garment company that's not using your usual fabrics for its products. National Safety Apparel specializes in making clothing that will protect industrial workers from dangers in the workplace.

When the company first started, they would hand-sew steel so that steel workers would be safe on the job. Although some of their clients may have changed as they've expanded into doing work for power plants, refineries, and utility companies much of the work is still done by hand as it was in the beginning.

While some of the work is done by machine, Sal Geraci, Vice President of Operations, stresses the importance of his employees working by hand. "As important as the technologies we've invested in are, the human element is as important as anything," he says.

In just 5 years, the amount of work the company does has more than doubled. Growth has forced the company to search for a place to expand, hoping to find a facility twice as large as their W. 150th Street facility.

National Safety Apparel currently employs 130 people but looks to hire more Clevelanders during the expansion process.

Working to keep people safe while helping Cleveland Grow is "What Works" for National Safety Apparel.

Overview of NFPA 70E: NFPA 70E is not a law, but a “voluntary consensus standard” referenced by the National Electric Code for safety requirements and has been cited by OSHA under the General Duty Clause. Within every organization, there are a number of maintenance workers, electricians, machine operators, or HVAC personnel who are at risk of an electric arc flash and need FR clothing protection as specified by NFPA 70E. In fact, many industries where employees work on or near electrical equipment are affected by NFPA 70E.

An important change to NFPA 70E could result in increased sales for you!

In the past, a worker could use a non-FR undergarment, layered with an FR garment that was rated HRC 1 to achieve HRC 2 protection. This is no longer the case.

With the new NFPA 70E - 2009 revision, you can still wear cotton or natural fiber undergarments, however you cannot use non-FR garments to layer with an FR garment to increase the HRC rating.

What does this mean to you? You can now offer several solutions for NFPA 70E dailywear.

Here are 2 choices you can provide that will allow a wearer to achieve HRC 2 protection:

1. You can sell a single layer, stand alone garment that is rated HRC 2. Fabric choices vary, from DuPont Protera, Westex Indura Ultrasoft wovens and knits, as well as several other fabrics.

2. If your customer is wearing an HRC 1 rated garment, you can provide them with our FR Performance Wear T-Shirt, allowing the wearer to layer both garments to achieve proper HRC 2 protection.

Choosing the correct garment for the job is an absolute must especially in high traffic areas. National Safety Apparel has Class 2 and Class 3 garments available and they are arc rated.

The Arc Goggle in combination with the Balaclava provides superior flexibility, outstanding visual light transmission (VLT) and exceptional comfort.

The Carbon X balaclava is a triple-layer hood that is designed with a breathing chamber for increased airflow and holes for eye exposure only. The hood is designed for the arc goggle to be worn in combination and is an effective alternative to beekeeper hoods.

The Arc Goggle is designed specifically to address the requirements of Arc Flash Protection. The optically correct hard coated outer lens has an anti-fog inner lens with baffled top and bottom vents for increased airflow. An elastic strap comfortably secures the goggle to the head and hard hat.

Arc Flash Kits in Stock at NSA

NSA offers a variety of kits in stock and will ship stock kits within 10 business days.

Arc Flash Kits provide arc flash protection in a convenient package. Kits are grouped items that are commonly purchased to outfit an employee for specific hazard levels.

Kits are available as Level 2 (Minimum ATPV 8 cal/cm²) or Level 4 (Minimum APTV 40 cal/cm²). Level 2 kits include flame resistant coveralls, or a FR short coat and FR bib overalls. A protective kit may also contain insulating gloves, glove protectors, protective hard hat with faceshield, safety glasses, and gear bag to carry and protect the included gear.

Level 4 Kits include flame resistant short coat and bib overalls, while others are available in FR long coats and leggings. They also include arc flash hood, hood bag, Class 2 rubber insulating gloves, leather glove protector, glove bag, safety glasses and gear bag.

Protective apparel that incorporates Dupont™ Kevlar® Armor Technology are designed for use in very high-risk situations and provide an excellent level of protection against cuts.
